MMCA International Masterworks: Water Lilies and Chandeliers

MMCA 해외 명작 : 수련과 샹들리에

This permanent exhibition showcases over forty major works from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's international collection. Inspired by the tradition of sixteenth-century European "cabinets of curiosities," it offers fresh visual and intellectual experiences. Museum collections represent an essential asset for understanding the artistic and historical movements of an era, and sharing them with the public is a central function of contemporary museums. The exhibition particularly celebrates recent acquisitions, notably the Lee Kun-hee collection donated in 2021, which enriches the museum's holdings of nineteenth-century European art and contemporary international art. The title "Water Lilies and Chandeliers" combines two seemingly opposite terms: Monet's Water Lilies (1917-1920), embodying Impressionist painting of light, and Ai Weiwei's Black Chandelier (2017-2021). This juxtaposition invites exploration of possible connections beyond temporal and cultural boundaries.

Check opening hours on the museum's official site

Many Korean national museums close one day a week, often Mondays — worth checking before you make the trip.

The most anticipated temporary exhibitions sometimes limit access to online time-slot reservations, especially on weekends.
