Lee Daewon: There Is Nothing to Make You Sad

Lee Daewon (1921–2005) ranks among Korea's most beloved painters of modern and contemporary art. His landscapes filled with vivid colors depicting orchards, mountains, ponds, and fields have long captivated the hearts and minds of many. This exhibition moves beyond viewing him simply as a painter of bright landscapes. His luminous surfaces are not the product of innate optimism, but rather the result of prolonged observation, continuous learning, and formal restraint. Lee Daewon painted Western-style works while subjectively reconstituting the formal methods of Korean crafts and East Asian painting within his own practice. Tradition became the foundation of his pictorial world, and Western modernism the language he mastered and transcended. His light, accumulated within the picture plane rather than floating above it, emerges from his patient exploration over decades of the same locale. The absence of sorrow in his paintings stems not from ignorance of suffering, but from the time spent patiently accumulating and restraining—a radiant and serene world untouched by sadness.

Gwacheon Museum's 40th Anniversary Project: Imaginaries of Light

Marking its 40th anniversary, the Gwacheon branch of the National Museum of Contemporary Art re-examines its role and modes of experience as a place where nature, architecture, and art coexist. Exhibitions, education, design, and public programs interconnect to reflect on four decades of history and explore future possibilities. An installation project titled 'Staying Places' invites visitors to linger among the sculpture park's works and form new relationships with them. 'Vistas' presents works by Kim A-young and Philippe Parreno throughout the museum's shared spaces, exploring light as a central theme. Reunited After 83 Years: A Stele Fragment Discovered at Wolseong in Gyeongju

A stele fragment discovered at the western side of Wolseong in Gyeongju in 1937 bore only the character '存'. In 2020, a second fragment emerged during archaeological excavations of the site, revealing the characters '貢', '白', '不', and '天'. Through 3D analysis, the fracture surfaces of these two pieces matched perfectly, together completing the character '稱'. While the original inscription's contents, author, date, and purpose remain unknown, compositional analysis confirms the stele was carved from local alkali granite sourced from Mount Namsan near Gyeongju. The use of lishu (clerical script) rather than the regular script typical of Silla stelae raises a fascinating debate: might this be a Goguryeo stele from the 5th century, or a later Silla creation?
