On Title — Text, Typography, Moving Images
제목전(展)
This exhibition explores Korean film titles since 1919 across 8,400 titles and multiple analyses: their lexical frequency reveals the anxieties and sentiments of each era; their stylistic evolution reflects cultural trends, from classical language to vernacular expressions. The exhibition examines how film titles establish dominant narratives: the omnipresence of the word « love », the preponderance of feminine terms, the metaphors of « night » and « youth » embodying existential states. The works also explore how simple words—« king », « path », « money »—condense universes of power, migration, and desire. The exhibition extends this reflection through animation installations and contemporary lettering, transforming static titles into dynamic visual experiences. It thus celebrates how Korean cinema has named the world through its titles, and how these names embody a nation's cultural history.
