The National Museum of Cheongju opened on October 30, 1987, to investigate, excavate, and study the cultural heritage of the Chungcheongbuk region, present it through exhibitions, and highlight the cultural characteristics of the Cheongju area through various educational programs. The museum, considered a monumental work of contemporary Korean architecture, is located in a valley leading to the Sangsan Fortress, with the scenery of the eastern slope of Mount Uam as its backdrop. In 2022, the permanent exhibition galleries were newly reorganized and opened to the public. The Archaeology and Art sections display excavated artifacts from the prehistoric, ancient, Three Kingdoms, Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon periods of Chungcheongbuk Province, as well as metal cultural properties and Buddhist statues of transcendent beauty. Furthermore, to strengthen the National Museum of Cheongju's metal cultural brand, a Gold Crown Gallery has been opened, showcasing the essence of metal craftsmanship, including the gold crown and gold belt from Seobong Tomb. The National Museum of Cheongju annually organizes special exhibitions on various themes, as well as cultural and educational programs such as museum research courses, children's museum schools, and traditional culture classes, along with events such as the Spring Cultural Festival, providing users with diverse and enriching experiences.
