The museum opened on November 2, 1984, as the seventh national museum, following those in Seoul, Gyeongju, Buyeo, Gongju, Kaesong, and Gwangju. Located within Jinju Fortress (Historic Site No. 118), the site of the largest battle of the Japanese Invasion of Imjin, the building was designed by Kim Swoon (1931-1986) and modeled after Korean wooden pagodas. It was founded with the goal of becoming "a central research institution for Gaya culture." In 1998, the functions of "Gaya culture research" were transferred to the National Museum of Gimhae, and the National Museum of Jinju reopened as a museum dedicated to the Japanese Invasion of Imjin. Since then, it has collected and exhibited cultural relics related to the Japanese Invasion of Imjin and conducted various research projects, illuminating the diverse aspects of the Japanese Invasion of Imjin as an international war.
