Gangwon in the Unified Silla Period
강원의 통일신라
After Silla's unification of the Three Kingdoms in 676, the Gangwon region was reorganized through the establishment of administrative centers at Chuncheon, Gangneung, and Wonju. Temples were constructed around these key sites and gradually became centers of Seon Buddhist practice. From the 9th century onward, temples nestled in remote mountains like Seoraksan emerged as major spiritual centers. This exhibition explores how Gangwon, initially closely connected to the capital Gyeongju, gradually developed its own regional powers and distinct cultural identity. Stamped pottery discovered across the region demonstrates Silla's central control, while stone pagodas and memorial stones honoring monks reveal the rise of regional patrons supporting Seon Buddhism's expansion. This transformation illustrates how Gangwon progressively emerged as a region with independent cultural characteristics.
