Gangwon in the Unified Silla Period
강원의 통일신라
Reopened in September 2026, this space explores how unified Silla governed and restructured the Gangwon region after 676, and what cultures and beliefs took root there. Following unification, Silla established major administrative centers in Chuncheon, Gangneung, and Wonju. Temples were built around these hubs, and from the 9th century onward, Seon Buddhist temples flourished in deep mountains. Stamped-pattern ceramics discovered throughout the region testify to Silla's central control. As central influence weakened, local powers and Seon Buddhism grew together, spreading meditation temples across the landscape. Pagodas and commemorative stelae honoring monks reflect the growing decentralization of late unified Silla.
