MMCA Gwacheon - Permanent Exhibition "Korean Modern and Contemporary Art II"

MMCA 과천 상설전 «한국근현대미술 II»

This permanent exhibition presents over one hundred twenty major works created in the second half of the twentieth century from the national collections. Founded in 1969, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has systematically built its collections since 1971 with a focus on Korean art historical research, accumulating nearly twelve thousand artworks and archival materials. The exhibition explores the major movements of Korean modern and contemporary art from 1950 to 1990: figuration and abstraction, tradition and modernity, avant-garde and establishment, artistic purity and social engagement. It also emphasizes subjects insufficiently documented in traditional art historiography, such as art and nation-building, or modernist women artists, some rediscovered through textile media like embroidery and tapestry. Monographic sections dedicated to masters like Kim Hwangi and Yun Hyung-keun offer deeper understanding of their artistic universes. Opened on April 22, this new presentation provides a more multidimensional view of Korean art history, highlighting artists and movements long marginalized, particularly feminist folk art, popular art, and critical realism.

The most anticipated temporary exhibitions sometimes limit access to online time-slot reservations, especially on weekends.
