Reunited After 83 Years: A Stele Fragment Discovered at Wolseong in Gyeongju

83년 만에 만남, 경주 월성에서 찾은 비석 조각

In 1937, a broken stele fragment was discovered west of Wolseong in Gyeongju. For 83 years, this piece remained separated from its counterpart, which emerged during 2020 excavations conducted by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage Research in Gyeongju. Using advanced 3D analysis, the two fragments were successfully reunited, revealing a complete character: 「稱」. The inscriptions are carved in lishu script rather than the kaishu style typical of Silla steles, and feature characters identical to those on King Gwanggaeto's stele from Goguryeo, raising intriguing questions about its origins and dating. Material analysis confirms the alkaline granite originates from quarries near Mount Namsan, Gyeongju.

Check opening hours on the museum's official site

Many Korean national museums close one day a week, often Mondays — worth checking before you make the trip.

  2. 2

Book a time slot for the most popular exhibitions

The most anticipated temporary exhibitions sometimes limit access to online time-slot reservations, especially on weekends.

    Permanent collections are often free

Only certain special or temporary exhibitions charge admission — the permanent collection itself is free to enter at most national museums.

  4. 4
