The National Museum of Modern Art opened at Gyeongbokgung in 1969. In 2018, it inaugurated the National Museum of Modern Art Cheongju, reconstructed from a former tobacco manufacturing plant in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk Province, with the aim of developing it into a major cultural and artistic destination in the central region. In 2019, marking the museum's 50th anniversary, a commemorative ceremony was held, and the museum is establishing itself as an open art museum in the world sharing art culture. The National Museum of Modern Art Cheongju presents Korea's first publicly accessible art storage facility, based on the museum's collection and holdings of the government and Korean Art Bank. The open storage allows visitors to view artworks while they are kept in their storage conditions, enabling appreciation of a vast quantity of works while also understanding the museum's often invisible functions, making it an expanded concept of art museum.
