A Stranger in Paris

파리의 이방인

After the Korean War, many Korean artists moved to Paris, viewing it as the capital of modern art. Those who settled there between the 1950s and 1970s engaged with Paris's vibrant artistic scene, which was competing with New York for international supremacy. This exhibition traces the artistic worlds of these creators, beginning with Yi Jong-u, the first Korean artist to establish himself in Paris in 1925. It illuminates how these artists navigated between cultural identity and modernization, exploring new subjects and media to redefine contemporary art's boundaries, ultimately forging a unique contribution to the global art scene from their experience as outsiders.

  1. 1

Check opening hours on the museum's official site

Many Korean national museums close one day a week, often Mondays — worth checking before you make the trip.

  2. 2

Book a time slot for the most popular exhibitions

The most anticipated temporary exhibitions sometimes limit access to online time-slot reservations, especially on weekends.

  3. 3

    Permanent collections are often free

Only certain special or temporary exhibitions charge admission — the permanent collection itself is free to enter at most national museums.
