After the Korean War, many Korean artists traveled to Paris, viewing the city as the capital of modern art. They exchanged with artists from around the world in a Paris that competed with New York for artistic leadership, building their own creative universes. This exhibition explores in depth the artistic worlds of Korean artists, beginning with Lee Jong-woo, the first to go to Paris in 1925, and those who emigrated between the 1950s and 1970s. It examines how these « expatriates » sought cultural identity in foreign lands, pursued modernity, explored new subjects, and experimented with new media, expanding the boundaries of contemporary art, revealing the significance of their lives and works as strangers.
