The National Museum of Iksan is a site-centered museum located within Mireuksaji, a Baekje temple site (Designated Cultural Heritage No. 150) in Iksan, and was established based on the results of extensive excavation surveys conducted from 1980 to 1996. Through excavations, the temple's architectural layout and approximately 19,000 artifacts spanning from the founding period to the Joseon dynasty were recovered, and in 1997, the Mireuksaji Relics Exhibition Hall was opened to efficiently preserve and display these materials. In 2009, during the disassembly and restoration process of the Stone Pagoda of Mireuksaji, National Treasure No. 11, a large quantity of sarira ornaments was unearthed, and in 2015, Mireuksaji and Wanggungri sites were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Late that same year, the existing museum was elevated to national status and took on the systematic management of artifacts excavated from Mireuksaji. The museum contributes to regional cultural development and the expansion of the public's right to cultural enjoyment through various exhibitions and educational programs.
