About
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which opened in 1969 at Gyeongbokgung Palace, was relocated in 1973 to the East Wing of Deoksugung Stone Pagoda Gallery, and then completed and opened in 1986 at its current location in Gwacheon with international-scale facilities and an outdoor sculpture garden, opening a new chapter in Korean art and culture. In 1998, the West Wing of Deoksugung Stone Pagoda Gallery, located in central Seoul, was reopened as the Deoksugung Museum of Art, a branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, playing a specialized role as a modern art museum. In November 2013, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art - Seoul was established and opened on the site of the former Headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense in Sogyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, equipped with exhibition halls, project galleries, a cinema, and a multipurpose hall, thereby implementing the cultural values of Korea's past, present, and future through various activities. In 2018, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art - Cheongju was opened, reconstructed from the former tobacco manufacturing factory in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, with efforts to foster it as a major cultural art destination in the central region. In 2019, marking its 50th anniversary, the museum held a commemorative ceremony and positioned itself as an open museum in the world sharing art and culture. To accommodate visitors wishing to visit all three locations of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, a free art shuttle bus service operates four times daily.
